A Duvet is not the same as a comforter, which is generally heavier than a duvet and doesn’t include shams or pillowcases. A Duvet has shaping darts on top to create the neatly pressed look you see in stores around Christmas. And incidentally, it differs from a Quilt because it doesn’t have batting inside it – only fabric casing that’s usually 100% cotton with polyester filling for ease of care. Looking for quilt covers? Duvet covers are typically sold in sets with two to six pieces, each piece including a fitted sheet, two shams, and either a pillow case or pillow insert. Duvet sets can be purchased as single duvets or in full-sized comforters.
Duvet Inserts
Duvet inserts are sized to fit on top of your duvet cover. You use them as a comforter, and you’re finished for the day! The only way to know if a duvet insert will fit is by measuring your current one and comparing it to the new one you’re buying. If the holes are too far apart or the buttons are too large, you will go through the entire process again, but it’s a simple way to get a custom-fit duvet. Make sure you measure both sides at the same time. The only difference is that your current duvet insert requires a little fine-tuning so that you don’t end up with short arms or extra stuffing. If you’re happy with your current duvet inserts, then sticking with what works for you is the way to go!
Shams
Shams are made from either cotton or polyester fabric and have an opening on top where your pillow goes through. Duvet covers are sold in sets with two to six pieces, each piece including a fitted sheet, two shams, and either a pillow case or pillow insert. These sets can be purchased as single duvets or in full-sized comforters.
Comforters
Unlike duvet inserts, comforters are not used as a cover! Instead, you place them on top of your blanket to give it a more finished look. The only way to know if this will work for you is by measuring your comforter and duvet insert so that when placed on top of each other, you’re “just right” at the seams. If you purchase a comforter, you will need to purchase a duvet insert separately.
