In General

Losing your social security card can be stressful. The same goes if your card was stolen. Regardless if your card was stolen or lost, you will want to replace it right away, but you will need a few documents you need, which prove your citizenship status and identity.

Documents Required To Obtain A Social Security Cards

Identity

To prove your identity, you’ll want to show the Social Security Administration’s office your driver’s licensed or a stat-issued identity card. If you don’t have a driver’s license, then a U.S. passport will be accepted. However, if you don’t have any of those, then you can provide documents such as a health insurance card, employee ID card, school ID card or a military ID card that was issued by the U.S. military.

Your Age

To prove your age, you can use a birth certificate, but if you don’t have one, then other documents might be accepted by the SSA office. For example, if you have a religious record that shows your date of birth and you were issued it before you were five, then the office might accept that. A U.S. passport or hospital record of your birth might be acceptable too.

Proving Citizenship

providing citizenship

Proving your U.S. citizenship is easy, as you can either use your birth certificate or U.S. issued passport. Both of these documents will be accepted by the SSA office. If you need to prove your immigration status, then you can provide documents such as an admission stamp on your foreign passport or an I-766 EAD.

Important Information

You cannot print out copies of your documents and expect the SSA office to accept them. This is because documents have to be original or they can be copies of the original and certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies are not acceptable, nor are notarized copies of receipts or documents. If such documents are provided to the SSA office, then they will likely be returned to you and you will be told to obtain the originals, so make sure you have original copies of your documents before you apply for a social security card, regardless if it’s been lost or has been stolen.

Those are the documents you need. Have you lost your social security card or has it been stolen? If so, then gather the required documents and then apply for a replacement card as soon as possible.
